Since bursting onto the scene in late 2003 with the fantastic debut Darts Of Pleasure EP on Domino Records, Franz Ferdinand have been the acceptable face of angular Gang Of Four influenced indie. Filling dance floors in sweaty clubs from Edinburgh to Brighton with fantastic hooks, foot stomping choruses and impossibly simple rhythms has always been the aim, but can they continue the tradition with their four-years-in-the-making third LP?
In short yes. But FF's third record is a very different beast to it's two previous brothers. From the Talking Heads/Fear Of Music influenced afro-beat of 'Send Him Away' to the french-electro tinged 'Lucid Dreams', it's clear the band have not been locked in a musical bubble for four years. This is a Franz Ferdinand record, but not as we know it. It is deliciously divergent stuff, taking the best influences from the years between albums and smashing them together to create a strange dancefloor beast. This is music for the night; dark, dangerous, heated, dirty, slick rhythms for creating love and lust. It's a filthier Franz Ferdinand, but a Franz Ferdinand still completely in touch with what made them so loveable and irresistible in the first place. At no point however does this variation on the traditional formula break the feel of the album, it's certainly an aid rather than a hindrance or obstacle. Fantastically glam, incredulously danceable, successfully progressive; Franz Ferdinand once again prove why they are kings of any stylish indie dancefloor worth it's guyliner and skinny jeans.
Here's an MP3 of an early version of Lucid Dreams, minus all the crazy french-electro synth lines. It's still a complete stormer of a tune though. Also worth checking out the Of Montreal cover, as well as the other songs they cover in the same post over at You Aint No Picasso.
